Meta Absent From AI's Power Consolidation Moment

Sunday, June 7, 2026 · 4:50 AM

The past weeks have crystallized a stark reality: the AI industry's most valuable relationships now run through Washington. OpenAI is discussing equity stakes with the Trump administration. Sriram Krishnan left his White House role to found a new institution shaping Trump's AI policy. Anthropic's models are being prepared for NSA cyber operations. Microsoft's AI chief declared freedom to pursue superintelligence without OpenAI constraints. Meta appears nowhere in these power dynamics.

Meta's absence reflects a strategic choice made years ago. Mark Zuckerberg bet on open-source models and consumer applications rather than the enterprise fortress strategy competitors embraced. Llama has gained traction in developer communities, but it lacks the institutional credibility that comes from government contracts and policy alignment. While OpenAI and Anthropic cultivated relationships with federal agencies, Meta focused on mobile and social platforms where regulatory friction exists rather than opportunity.

The infrastructure arms race now defines competitive advantage. AirTrunk's $30 billion commitment to 5GW of Indian data center capacity shows how the game has shifted from raw model capability to access and operational scale. The industry consensus has pivoted from tokenmaxxing and move-fast-break-things toward controlled deployment and cost management. Data center operators and governments now hold more leverage than model makers alone. Meta's substantial computational assets become less defensible when companies can argue they serve national security or state interests.

There's irony in Meta's position. The company built Facebook on network effects and scale advantages. In AI, those traditional moats matter less than relationship density with power brokers. Llama's open nature actually creates strategic liability when the government prefers proprietary systems it can control and audit. The NSA testing Anthropic's Mythos for cyber operations signals a deliberate choice by U.S. intelligence to work with partners willing to restrict access and embed oversight mechanisms.

Meta's next move requires acknowledging that AI's commercial future and political future have merged. Continuing to compete on model quality and open-source adoption while ignoring government strategy amounts to leaving billions on the table. The company either pivots toward institutional relationships, risking its open-source brand, or accepts a diminished role in defining how AI gets deployed across the economy. The window for a third option is closing fast.
